Digital mapping tools are quickly making relics of paper maps. GPS units make great driving partners. Online maps offer more flexibility with search features and multiple perspectives.
Google Maps is not the only game in town for maps and directions. Though later to the scene, Microsoft's map site is just as useful. You might even find that it tops Google's offering.
Windows Live covers many of the basics that you've seen from Google Maps. You can search for an address, print a street map and get driving directions. Plot local restaurants, stores or other businesses on the map. Windows Live also includes features and details you won't find from Google.
You can check traffic conditions through Windows Live. The map colors traffic bottlenecks in red. It even shows specific accidents. Just put the mouse pointer over the accident symbol for details. The information includes a description and the estimated time required to clear the scene.
Windows Live also includes a "Locate me" feature. It's a quick way to focus the map on your location when you're on the road. The feature uses Wi-Fi signals, so it's perfect for laptops.
Like Google Maps, Windows Live provides satellite imagery. You can get a feel for new areas even before you start driving. That's something you don't get from paper maps.
For most metropolitan areas, Windows Live also offers a bird's eye view. It sometimes includes more detail than satellite photos. Check out the pictures below to see the difference. On top is a satellite still from Google Maps. Below it is the Windows Live bird's-eye view of the same area.
