Checkers is easy to understand. Some people may consider it child’s play. But for researchers in Canada, it has opened the door to a whole new method of computer problem solving. Chinook, the software they’ve developed, doesn’t use rules of thumb. Rather, it looks at every possible move. That might not mean anything to you. Until you play a game of checkers with Chinook, that is. See, Chinook can’t lose. The best you can hope for is a draw. If you feel like being humbled, why not challenge Chinook to a game? www.cs.ualberta.ca/~chinook/
