OK -- 2014 was the first full year for hubby and I to receive both a pension and SSA check. Needless to say, I just wrote two big checks to the government. Then I wrote 2 more -- quarterly payments. Feeling depressed, I wandered into Office Depot to see if they had anything for door prizes. They used to have clearance items stacked all over!! Not anymore. I found nothing to buy for SLUGO. But --- I did find a clearance item that intrigued me enough to ask one of the salespeople to enter the password so I could 'play around' with it. Fun & frustrating, small and light, and I bought it. Last one - and a floor model to boot -- but knocked another 10% off. So for $179 I bought www.officedepot.com/a/products/352667/HP-Pavilion-10-e010nr-TouchSmart-Laptop/Office Depot is removing their set-up and restoring the factory defaults. It comes with McAfee -- and I asked them NOT to install it. We joked that it is already a turtle, no need to make it a snail. Small, compact, Win 8.1 --- it will become my traveling genealogy computer, one that runs the programs I always use the way I use them! Even has a HDMI slot so I can connect it to the TV. Now I'll get to learn yet another version of Windows. Anyway -- feeling better. I spent money on ME. As I told the accountant --- You know you've paid a lot in taxes when a 3 week trip to Norway would have been cheaper!

Congrats on the new machine, sounds like a good deal on a small Win 8.1 computer. There's still some software that runs only or best on Windows I'd guess.

I don't have a tablet and I have a 10.1" dell netbook and I use it more than my fifteen other computers. It is compact and easy to pack. Mine is only a n270 single core and won't do streaming movies. Yours being newer I am sure it will run faster. Having HTMI and usb 3 is a real winner. You couldn't have picked up one that cheap used on craigslist.

I'm really liking this small laptop -- but it is loaded with crapware. I have not run PCdecrapifier, just tried deleting/uninstalling things I don't want or will never use. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. So I'm trying a new approach - reinstall. I wanted to format C: and start from scratch . . . but how? It is Win 8.1 with no restore disks and no CD/DVD drive. Resorting to my favorite information manager -- GOOGLE -- I found the HP site had some really informative articles and even a few videos. I found the restore options - and one formats the C: drive, installs Win 8.1 and the drivers and limited software. It has been chugging away for about 2 hours now -- and finally booted to a clean version of Win8.1!!! YES!!! Gone is the bloatware and McAfee, gone are tons of games I will never play. Gone too is my copy of Win Office 2013 -- but maybe I can download that from the Win Store -- I have the 'key' numbers. Anyway -- I'm liking this Win8.1 -- so far. Time will tell and Win10 is just around the corner.
