I have been playing Free Cell since prior to 2007. I can't tell you when I started, but the only Catholic friend I ever had died that year and we had been talking about Free Cell. Sometime during my Windows XP days, and, I'm guessing Word 97 maybe, I started keeping track of the REAL tough Free Cell games, by game number. When I advanced to Windows 7, my records came right along with it. Then, maybe one year ago, the file with all of those game numbers that I had so carefully kept track of, became corrupted. Nothing I had would open the file. X*<c$*! Cuss word there. So I ignored it from then on. I was sorry to see it go, but I abandoned the effort since I couldn't access it. When I got Windows 10, I also got Word 2013, which obviously was designed from scratch by those with too much time on their hands at Microsoft, and was a B....to learn and I'm still not up to speed on either of those. However, in searching for Spyder convertibles with Windows Explorer a few days ago, my search popped up with a file that said something about scoring for Free Cell and Spyder Solitaire, so I double clicked it and opened it with Word. And there were my high scores etc. for both games! Imagine that. For some reason, I then tried to open my corrupted file of REALLY TOUGH FREE CELL game numbers, and lo and behold, drum roll, it opened that corrupted file. I promptly saved it as a .docx file under Word 2013.
I don't know which program did it, but that was (my) good luck piece for 2015, I guess.

Mit, I'm taking a wild guess here but I'm willing to bet that it was a compatibility problem between a older version of Word and the newer version you have now. I have lots of files yet from Office 97 up through Office 2003 that say they are readable using newer versions on Office, but in fact are not. It is funny though that I can read those same older files using Kingston Office or Libre Office with no problems. I believe that one of your Windows updates probably rendered that older file unreadable until you opened it with the newer version of Word. Glad you can again read your files.
P.S. I am now using Office 2016, so hopefully it won't go away again soon. (SMILE)
